Artist Statement
My artwork comes from my internal response to life as it unfolds around me. My daily studio practice includes drawing from nature and from the objects I surround myself with. While primarily a painter, I like to move fluidly between media–painting, collage, drawing, and printmaking. I find this helps to keep my work fresh and also helps me see things from different perspectives. For many years I focused on interpreting the Maine landscape in painted paper collage. Of late, I have been moving into work that is less representational and more abstract. With abstraction I can channel pure emotion, pure energy as I play with the elements of color, light, line, and space. Interestingly, I find that playing with abstract painting is both exciting and challenging in equal measure. Finally, I believe that spending time with art–whether making it or viewing it– can help us experience our shared humanity and deepen our connection to all of life.
