The 4 types of exhibitions are All-Member, Juried, Invitational (including Group, Solo, and Two-Person shows), and Hybrid.

When organizing a show as a volunteer coordinator, or determining which calls for art to enter as an artist, it’s important to understand the differences between the types.

All-Member Exhibitions

• All UMVA artists are invited to enter work, via an announced Call for Art on the UMVA website.
• Nonjuried showcase, designed to show as many artists as possible.
• Coordinator(s) will choose at least one piece from each artist, space permitting.
• If entries exceed space capacity, inclusion in the show is first come, first served.
• As an open call, all-member exhibitions are entitled to UMVA support, publicity, and branding. [LINK to come.]

Juried Exhibitions

• All UMVA members are invited to submit work, via an announced Call for Art on the UVMA website.

• A Juror (from within or outside of UMVA) is announced as part of the call.

• Selections are made at the juror’s discretion. Not every artist who enters will be selected.

• As an open call, juried exhibitions are entitled to UMVA support, publicity, and branding. [LINK to come.]

Invitational Exhibitions

• A Regional Group or other group of self-selecting UMVA artists, independently organize a show of their work

• No Call for Art will be posted. Only invited artists are included.

• Invitationals may be organized around a theme, a particular medium, geographic region, etc.

• All announcements and promotions must clearly indicate that the show is Invitational and limited to invited artists only

• Solo and Two-Person Shows are also considered invitationals. These more focused shows feature the work of 1–2 UMVA artists.

• To receive UMVA support, publicity, and branding, organizers of invitational shows of any size must first confer with the Exhibitions Team. [LINK to come.]

Hybrid Exhibitions

• Hybrid Exhibitions are part invitational, part juried. 
• Exhibition Coordinators and/or their Juror will invite some artists, in addition to the juror selecting work through a UMVA Call for Art. The call will be posted to the UMVA website, and must clearly indicate the hybrid format of the show.
• Invited artists who are not current UMVA members will be encouraged to join.
• All artists agree to participate under announced commission structure and UMVA exhibition policies, whether or not they are members.

• Selections from the call are made at the juror’s discretion. Not every artist who enters will be selected.

Exhibition Coordinator Inclusion

UMVA show are organized by volunteer Exhibition Coordinators who are UMVA artists themselves, and who often wish to participate in the show in addition to serving their fellow union members by organizing. Exhibition Coordinators may be included in their own open-call shows if 1) their work is selected by the show’s juror, or 2) the show is a nonjuried all-member format. Exhibition Coordinators may not include themselves in an open-call show for which they also serve as jurors. Invitational and hybrid shows may include organizers as invited or juried-in artists. UMVA guidelines require all exhibitions to clearly state their format in all calls and announcements.
