Artist Statement
Tim Van Hook is an artist in Casco ME working mostly in painted wooden sculpture and art furniture.
Photo descriptions:
“1978” is a part my Past Lives series. During 1976-8 I was the caretaker of an Ohio farm, where I built oil-fired cone-10 kiln for my wife at the time, programmed the local county jail computer, and bought a very-used Mercedes 200D.
“Artscending a Staircase” is a personal pastiche of 20th century sculptors, and a few painters, inspired by DuChamp (balusters 10 and 25).
“Bored&Stroked” is a part my CVA Selfie series. Recalling 1960’s Kustom Kar Kulture icon Rat Fink and my adolescent self customizing 1/24 scale model cars, I burn rubber with stroke-related sponsor decals on supercharged mobility.
“Fallow” was a wedding gift for my younger daughter, who sometimes works on an organic farm, and illustrates both plowed ground and a yellowish-brown color in false perspective relief.
“NYC Waltz” was inspired the recently discovered New York Waltz by Chopin, a painting of ballroom dancers by a friend who lives in New York where her husband is an architect, and my childhood in northeastern New Jersey in the shadow of Manhattan.
“Stijl Light” is an homage to the Dutch De Stijl movement, with Mondrian-hued strips forming a twisting cube hung by one corner, and remembers my membership in a Constructivist art collective in Kansas City in the early 70’s.
