Artist Statement
I like to take common, everyday things and put them together in ways that create a visual story. There’s also an element of Yankee frugality in reusing aged and broken objects that would otherwise be thrown away.
Sometimes the reason I’m attracted to a combination of objects is obvious to me; more often, it’s an emotional or subconscious choice.
I’ve always been interested in miniature worlds–aquariums, model train layouts, dollhouses–and many of my pieces reflect that interest. They are small worlds created through juxtapositions of unrelated items in a setting where familiar shapes take on new meaning. I enjoy working with textures–the decay of rust and corrosion against the richness of marble and velvet, or the warmth of wood against the sheen of metal.
I often expand on the use of found objects by adding in original photography, using a decal-like process to apply the photos to distressed surfaces.
