Kandinsky famously said that an object was a narrative, and, to the extent that he was correct, every object that exists in the world carries with it, its history. When we look at an object, we can’t help but recognize an object’s purpose for creation, and imagine its history of use. Its useful life creates a narrative, and with it, the connotations that our mind connects with our own experiences. Whether artifact or natural, an object, once removed from its context and useful life, becomes a combination merely of form, volume, and color. Function is removed. When I work in found object assemblage it is my intent to “unsee” that narrative and use each object in a dissociative way. If we really grasp experience, or see combinations of objects; form, volume, and color are reflective of our own life experiences and memories to create a new object or combination altogether. I’m seeking the emotional reaction to the combination of objects, not the meaning of each separate object: intuitive, emotional reaction versus intellectual dissection or explanation. I use found objects as cultural signifiers. Common objects that we experience in life reflect the culture in which we were born. Like children’s letter blocks, these are objects which we have all used in our lives. We share that common experience, and with it, a common culture. My work looks at western culture, and how the norms of culture are slowly eroding away. Such things as lack of civility, diminishing intellectual curiosity, and the rise of intolerance are fueled by the glorification of celebrity in a world that values opinion as fact and lies equal truth.
