Connecting to daily experience with both a painter’s and a photographer’s eye; resonating with the flat abstraction of simplified shapes as they relate to the boundaries of the image, I enter a dialog with the changing light and elemental forms of the Northeast coast. For the past 40+ years my drawings and photographs have been informed by that quality of light, by atmospheric weather, and by the ever changing sky. My “recordings,” through photography and drawing, are my attempt to reconnect with prime experience, to acknowledge and reflect upon those fleeting moments of grace. I draw inspiration from time spent on the wide, flat shelf at the Ducktrap, Lincolnville (close to home and frequently visited), and the Lubec/Campobello area from Johnson Bay to Head Harbor Light. Monhegan Island has been an annual pilgrimage since the early ‘80s. Maine has always been in my heart and in my consciousness as a place of retreat and respite. I find solace and renewal here, especially in the quieter places where land and water meet. Born and raised in Boston’s North End, our family summered in Maine in the 1950s, I later moved to Maine in 1976, after graduate school. I currently live in a 100+ year old farmhouse in South Hope, a resident here for over 40 years.
