I am from southern New Jersey and have a technical background. Originally starting in chemistry, I also had a lot of experience in traditional silver based photography. Ideas for photo setups were noted with thumbnails. These led to developed sketches, then painting, leaving photography in the dust before the advent of digital cameras. I am largely self-taught and my work so far has been mostly acrylic painting, though I also use charcoal, pencil and ink. Representational but never intended to exactly reproduce the subject, some of my paintings are based purely on imagination. I sometimes introduce elements that create a sense of passing time. Using layering and acrylic mediums I sometimes add transparency for depth. Limiting my palette to four or five colors, rather than trying to paint every color I can see, gives a sense of unity. After a six-year break, I am restarting – loaded with ideas and eager to make up for lost time. Though continuing with painting I’m experimenting with linocut, collage and printmaking to explore ways of simplifying my work and strengthening my composition. It’s a matter of evolution, every brush stroke is a learning experience.
