Deborah Jellison/Artist Statement A barren tree silhouetted against the winter sky; branches reflected in a forest pool; root systems that radiate across a pine understory, and underneath, mycelium; the vascular system of a human body. These are the forms, patterns and connections that repeat in my work. I was raised in northern Maine and have lived most of my life in wooded landscapes. This upbringing has afforded me a deep appreciation and love of nature. For me, the forest is where I feel at home-it’s a safe, sacred place that provides me with inspiration and materials for my studio practice. My series of mixed-media paintings interweave personal and regional history. The pathways of roots connect the plants, people, animals and mountain I grew up with.
