Artist Statement
David D. Pearce began painting watercolors in 2009 while stationed in Algiers, Algeria as U.S. ambassador. His art education has been largely self-directed, independent study. At Bowdoin College he did coursework in Classics and Art History. He has taken workshops with watercolorists Keiko Tanabe, George Politis and Michael Solevyev.
David’s style is semi-abstract. He draws inspiration from life in Maine and California as well as a career in journalism and diplomacy that took him to Europe, North Africa, the Persian Gulf states, the Middle East and South Asia. Watercolor appeals to him because there are few do-overs. The watercolor artist, like the diplomat, must respond quickly to unexpected developments.
David first showed his work at the U.S. ambassador’s residences in Algiers and Greece. As ambassador to Greece, he posted his watercolors on Twitter, which was warmly received by his Greek audience. The Greek Post Office did a special printing of several of his paintings as Greek postage stamps.
