A classical musician by profession, I turned 70 in March 2025 and have never believed I could paint or draw. However, also a documentary filmmaker, I’ve been working on films about artists for the past ten years. This involves examining a lot of paintings, interviewing artists and curators, and exploring how art schools have traditionally taught painting. An artist friend of mine invited me to join a life drawing group; it took courage to accept. Slowly, that process taught me perspective, and a certain amount of draftsmanship and confidence (the human body is the most difficult thing to draw). On my own, I began experimenting with watercolors, using a limited palette derived from the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. I find I enjoy unusual visuals, not what you would call standard watercolor scenes: an unhoused person sleeping on a brick sidewalk in Portland; a dilapidated old boat; a child’s surfer toy on the beach sand; the Portland Wastewater Treatment Facility on a July morning.
