Asher first studied printmaking in England, under the Bauhaus printmaker, Peter Strausfeld. Strausfeld (himself a student of Paul Klee) had been deemed ‘Degenerate’ by the Nazis, and had fled to England in 1937, forty years earlier. Asher enrolled in the prestigious Saint Martin’s School of Art, where he was introduced to the works of the German Expressionists and the Classical Japanese woodcut artists. This esoteric combination led him to explore the potentials of working with flat color and line. Soon Asher found himself in great demand as an illustrator. Editorial illustration often had to be produced overnight—not enough time for carving blocks, so he developed a painting technique that resembled woodblock prints. Asher moved to the United Stated in 1992, and began illustrating for the New Yorker, the New York Times, Children’s Books, Comics, and Graphic Novels. He is now part of the Artist Community of Monhegan Island
