FOX 22 BANGOR: Art Exhibit Highlighting Maine’s Dark Skies Opens in Belfast

BELFAST — An art exhibit highlighting Maine’s dark skies opened on Friday, January 17, in Belfast.

“There’s something very beautiful in, what does the night look like when we don’t have light pollution?”

According to organizer Arlene Gurewicz-Leighton, through photographs and paintings, they’re looking to answer that very question.

Hosted by Waterfall Arts in collaboration with Dark Sky Maine and the Union of Maine Visual Artists, the dark skies exhibition features work from over thirty known and unknown artists.

Its purpose is to raise the awareness of light pollution and its impact on our ecosystem.

“We’re animals too. We need to be in a dark environment at night be part of the circadian rhythm,” said Liv Kristin Robinson, a curator and organizer of the exhibition. “It helps all of us and they’re intriguing, they’re awe inspiring to be able to see some of the photographs. We’ll show you things you’ve never seen before.”

The exhibit, as well as a variety of related events, will be held from now until late-February.
